2023 : Why APC Governors allegedly want Buhari to choose one of them to succeed him

The purported presidential ambition of former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo and other political gladiators on the platform of the APC may be in jeopardy if the Governors of the ruling party follows through with their plan to allow one of them succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

According to reports, some APC Governors believe it will be better if the president support one of them to succeed him rather than give his support to one of the frontline candidates that has been heavily linked to be the presidential candidate of the party in 2023.

Why does some APC Governors want Buhari to choose one of them to succeed him?

That report claims they want the president to emulate what former president Olusegun Obasanjo did after his second term in 2007. Recall that former president Obasanjo chose the late Umaru Musa Yar’dua, who was the Governor of Katsina state at the time to succeed him.

The APC Governors believe it will be better if President Buhari favours one of them to clinch the presidential ticket of the party ahead of other major contenders in 2023 when he will finish his two terms in office. However, these Governors did not get a definite response from the president as he does not want to brazenly impose a candidate on the party.

The battles ahead

If this report is anything to go by, it means there might be a battle between the Governors who want the president to support one of them for the party’s presidential ticket and notable political figures like Tinubu, Yemi Osinbajo and others who have been rumoured to be nursing a presidential ambition.

Who will the president give his support?

The president is the leader of the party and will not want to make any key decision that will cause rancour within the party. As a result of this, the president may likely wait until after the presidential primary to support who ever emerges the presidential candidate of the party at the primaries ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
